Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used in the diagnosis and treatment of various abdominal conditions. A laparoscope, a thin long tube with a light and camera at the end, is introduced into the abdominal cavity through a small incision in the skin.
During laparoscopy, the doctor can examine the gallbladder, spleen, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, intestines, or stomach, for example. Laparoscopy is also used to remove cysts and tumours or to perform surgical procedures. Compared to open surgery, laparoscopy has a number of advantages, including smaller incisions, faster healing time, smaller scars and reduced risk of complications.
